​Western region and the new Western North Region

The Western and the Western North Regions, which has a population of about 2.4 million, are the highest producers of cocoa in the country contributing to over 50 percent of the total national production.

It is also the highest producer of timber and the second highest producer of gold after Ashanti Region.

Beyond this, the two western regions are the sole producers of rubber, bauxite, and manganese and they are also the major crude oil producing regions.

Tourism is also another avenue with economic potential in the region with the Bia National Park and Reserve, Egambra Crocodile Sanctuary, WassaDomama Rock Shrine, Nzulezu Settlement and Boako Waterfalls.

EC starts process to create new districts 22/10/2017

The Electoral Commission is to embark on field trips next week to assess the feasibility of government’s proposal to create new district assemblies in all the 10 regions. - Read More at ghanaweb-news.com (new window)

Ghana is now divided into 16 administrative regions, as of Feb 2019, sub-divided into a total of (now) about 230 districts.

The government has released a list of the remaining 37 districts that form part of the 42 newly created ones throughout the country.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, announced that Yilo Krobo, Ejura Sekyedumase, Savelugu, Nkoranza South, Kpando, Manya Krobo , Kassena Nankana and Sefwi-Wiawso are existing districts elevated to municipal status.
Some of the new districts include Salerugu which is carved out of the Tamale metropolis, the Kwahu Afram Plains South district out of Kwahu North, Afadzato out of the Hohoe district and the Agogo district out of the Asante Akyem District.

Ofosu Ampofo assured that the new districts will be given adequate seed capital to enable them function.He called on other traditional areas which have not been provided with new districts to be patient as government strives to meet their demands.
